Buurserzand, The Netherlands

Lately it has been all work and no play, so much so that I cannot recall the last time I went to bed before 5 a.m. only to wake, groggily, as the Frenchman leaves in the morning and then reawaken a few hours after that to boil a cup of water for tea, sit back down at the computer, and start back to work. (Of course, I should not complain as having so much work after going into solo practice only a little more than a year ago is truly a blessing.) Added to this afternoon owl/evening owl/night owl schedule has been the time change, with total darkness already falling by 5 p.m. around which time most shops in Enschede close their shutters for the evening.  Needless to say, our adventures have been few since my picnic in Ledeboerpark two weeks ago.

Determined to not let another weekend slip by without us even leaving the house we set off for a bit-too-ambitious bike ride Sunday as the sky was already beginning to turn golden. Our ride took us to the funnily-named Buurserzand nature park south of Enschede and past barren fields where, during our last bike ride that direction, thousands of tall cornstalks had stood. Buurserzand is a preserve that truly has it all: fields of heather, forests, grasslands, farmland, moss-covered pastures, and a small lake. The area is criss-crossed by sandy walking and biking trails, and cows roam freely. In the spring and summer, the heather blooms, washing the fields in a sea of purple. Perhaps when it blooms again in the spring work will be a little less busy and stressful and we can enjoy a full day in the fields.

  1. Hiya, I am really glad I have found this info. Nowadays bloggers publish just about gossip and internet stuff and this is really irritating. A good blog with exciting content, that’s what I need. Thank you for making this website, and I will be visiting again. Do you do newsletters? I Can not find it.
