Montmaurin, France

Following our trip to Limoux, the next day we drove closer still to the Pyrenees together with the Frenchman’s parents to visit the Gallo-Roman villa of Montmaurin. Built between the 1st and 4th centuries, the villa had more than two hundred rooms, indoor plumbing, and heated floors. Today, all that remains are the foundational ruins and a few mosaics. On this day, we were the only visitors, and the site’s hushed tranquility was all around.
